Why is there an abnormal sound in the chassis?

Abnormal sound in the chassis is generally related to the Stabilizer Link (Front shock absorber connecting rod)

Installation position

The stabilizer link is installed at the front axle, and the ball joints at both ends are respectively connected with the U-shaped stabilizer bar and the front shock absorber (or lower support arm). For models with stabilizer links installed on the rear axle, two connecting rods will also be installed, shape is slightly different from the front stabilizer link, but the structure and function of the ball joints are completely same. Both ends are connected to the U-shaped stabilizer bar and Lower arm (or Knuckle Steering).

Structure

Component parts: the ball joint at both ends + the middle connecting rod, the ball joint is welded on both sides of the middle connecting rod respectively.

The ball joint can be swung in all directions and is mainly composed of a ball pin, a ball seat and a dust cover.

Function

Before introducing the role of the stabilizer link, we need first understand the U-shaped stabilizer link.

U-shaped stabilizer link, also known as anti-roll bar, lateral stabilizer bar, balance bar, is an auxiliary elastic element in automobile suspension system. The U-shaped stabilizer link is a torsion bar spring made of spring steel, in the shape of a “U”, which is placed transversely at the front and rear of the car. The middle part of the rod body is hinged to the body or frame with a rubber bush, and the two ends are connected to the shock absorber or the lower arm through the stabilizer link, so the purpose of the connecting rod is to connect and transmit torque.

If the left and right wheels jump up and down at the same time, that is, when the body only moves vertically and the suspensions on both sides deform equally, the U-shaped stabilizer link rotates freely in the bushing, and the lateral stabilizer link does not work.

When the suspensions on both sides are unequally deformed and the body is inclined laterally to the road surface, when one side of the frame moves close to the spring support, the end of the side of the stabilizer link moves up relative to the frame, and when the other side of the frame is away from the spring, the end of the corresponding stabilizer link moves down relative to the frame, but when the body and the frame are tilted, the middle part of the U-shaped stabilizer link does not have relative motion to the frame. In this way, when the body is tilted, the longitudinal parts on both sides of the stabilizer link are deflected in different directions, so the stabilizer link is twisted and the side arms are bent, which increases the suspension angular rate.

The torsional internal moment caused by the elastic stabilizer link can hinder the deformation thereby reducing the lateral tilt and lateral angular vibration of the body. When the torsion bar arms at both ends jump in the same direction, the stabilizer bar does not work. When the left and right wheels jump in the opposite direction, the middle part of the stabilizer link will be twisted.

Common fault phenomena and reasons

Common fault phenomena:
Based on years of after-sales data and physical inspection, 99% of the faulty parts have the phenomenon of dust boot rupture, and the rupture position can be followed regularly. This is the main reason for returning the goods. The direct consequence of the rupture of the dust boot is the abnormal noise of the ball joint.

Reason:
Due to the rupture of the dust boot, some impurities such as dust and sewage will enter the inside of the ball joint, pollute the grease inside the ball joint, and the entry of foreign objects and the failure of lubrication will lead to increased wear of the ball pin and the ball pin base, resulting in abnormal noise.
