Rubber bushing is the most common type of bushing. It operates in a limited range without lubrication. Rubber bushings are usually used on control arms and spring sheets. To eliminate wear surfaces, rubber bushings are combined with inner and outer metal sleeves. The outer sleeve is usually pressed into the control arm or spring, while the inner sleeve is attached to the frame with set bolts. Since the rubber bushing absorbs the torsional motion of the suspension components, no friction or rotational wear occurs. Wear problems only occur when the rubber bushing separates from the inner and outer sleeves.

The rubber bushings are designed to give the chassis control of road noise and vibration. Problems such as ozone, UV light, extreme temperatures, etc. can harden the rubber bushing, causing noise and vibration from the rubber bushing.

Worn suspension bushings can be easily detected by removing the suspension to check for excessive movement of the upper and lower control arms. In most cases, the rubber bushing should tend to keep the control arm within the normal range at position and extreme control arm movement. If the control arm can easily go out of its normal range, that would indicate excessive wear on the rubber bushing or loose bolts.
